Christmas, and New Years are national celebrations around the world, but for many holidays can trigger depression for several reasons. This state of mind affects thousands of people without discriminating race, age, religion, culture, or socioeconomic status.

Depression is an emotional disorder and disease that is often not given the importance it should. It is estimated that about 900 thousand people commit suicide per year, depression disorder being the main cause. Therefore, do not confuse this disease with a passing mood. If you feel that your sadness is more than a temporary emotion, seek a specialist for treatment.

Here are some methods to overcome temporary depression .....

Write a list of things that make you happy:

Whatever makes you smile, write it down. Create a list of the activities and things that lift your spirits. Be realistic, and simple, as this will make it easier for you to achieve the goals you've listed. Review the list every morning, and at the end of the day journal about the activities you partook in during the day, and how that made you feel.

Praise and encourage yourself when you do something from your list, either verbally, or with a gift as a reward for achievement, and self improvement.

Remember, anything is possible when you set your mind to it, and put your plan into action.

Reach out to family & friends:

Isolation causes loneliness, a factor that can cause depression. Don't deprive yourself from the people who care about you, this is when you should reach out to them. Come up with activities, or an excuse to spend time with family, and friends. Quality time with loved one will help you keep you mind busy, and distracted. Share your problem with someone you feel comfortable with, as a healthy method to vent, and express your emotions. Having a friend, or individual to talk to can be of benefit as a support system to find a solution to your current situation. As they say that "Two heads are better than one".

Exercise:

There's several studies that show how physical exercise can be a great way to prevent and fight depression. Physical exercise increases the levels of serotonin, a substance that regulates mood, social behavior, appetite, digestion, sleep, memory, sexual desire and function. When we exercise, our body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Research has shown that exercise is an effective but often underused treatment for mild to moderate depression.

Types of exercises to practice:

Yoga, meditation, dancing, walking, running, swimming, zumba, sports,

outdoor and recreational activities, or anything that will boost your mood.

Find your WHY:

Focus on your blessings, abilities, and find your "WHY" in life. It can be your children, a loved one, a goal on your to do list that you have not yet accomplished. There's always a reason why you should push yourself to live at your highest potential.

Life is a blessing, we all have the ability to be happy, and enjoy our existence here on earth. Take care, love yourself, and live life with a purpose.
